First egg!!!!!!

21 weeks, and one of the buff girls gave us a beautiful little egg! They've been doing the "egg squat" and cackling like maniacs for about a week, and we were sure they were close. Woooohoooooo!

Congratulations! What a perfect looking egg, too - sometimes the first ones are a little strange looking... What talented creatures these chickens are, to produce such conveniently packaged, nutritious food for us!

WE ARE SO EXCITED FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Our chickens are about one week difference in age and a couple have doing EXACTLY what you explained, squatting --- even on my clay potted plants (which they scratched all the top soil out of) and they had a couple of horrible screams, like they were being attacked - me and the chicken-herding-dog, Howdy, kept dashing outside to make sure they weren't been attacked by a cat or something. Deputy Dave told me that it reminded him of being in a labor and delivery room...that he thought the poor girls were getting close to pushing out an egg.

I was wondering how the egg shell felt? Did you eat it? Where was it laid? I have so many questions!!!!!!!!

CONGRATULATIONS!

Thanks Miriam! It was so exciting, finding that first little egg! Sorta felt like finding the first chanterelle mushroom of the season, amazed that such a little treasure was just sitting there, waiting to be picked up. :) I was so stoked that it was a well formed egg, having seen on other's blogs what oddities first eggs can be.

Lana- Thanks! Haven't eaten them yet. Waiting for enough that we can both have a few at the same time. The squat is pretty funny. Most of the Buff girls, (who are several weeks older than the others), when we put our hand over their back, quickly squat down with their backs hunched. Hilarious. They've been singing their hearts out, long drawn out cackling for a couple minutes at a time. The first egg was a bit smaller than a large. Well formed, and felt just like a store egg. Today, we got two. One had a very thin shell, and had broken. The other was just as perfect as the first one. Yesterday's egg was in the yard, under a shade shelter we'd erected for the girls, but today's were both in the nest boxes (I put egg sized rocks in the boxes last night... Perhaps they got the idea?). Score!!!!

Congratulations! Always nice when the first one appears.
I like the little pullet eggs - they are so previous.
I have a suspicion that one of my ladies is laying somewhere that I can't find. I was getting three a day and now only two.
Grumble.
I'm going to take your hint about the egg sized rocks....

Congratulations, and will you understand if I tell you I'm a little bit jealous?
